Field Phenology Hike

DATE: Friday 4/24/26   TIME: 1:00pm - 3:00pm

Join Conservation Science staff member, Evan Timony, for a nature hike along historic carriage roads and help our team collect valuable scientific data! On this hike, you will learn about the Preserve’s long-term Phenology Project that started over 100 years ago in which over 300 species are monitored each year for phenology firsts. We will discuss our commitment to the conservation of species, the importance of keeping phenology data in a changing climate and learn how to connect more with the Shawangunk Ridge through its seasonal changes.

Guidance on how to use iNaturalist to help record observations throughout the year (it is encouraged to download this free app before your arrival) will also be given. Though we will be on the lookout for our key phenology species, we will also have the opportunity to discuss other Preserve conservation initiatives including vernal pool monitoring, peregrine falcon observations, sustainable rock climbing, forest management efforts, plus much more!

Please bring/wear comfortable walking shoes appropriate for walking on dirt pathways, clothing layers for various weather conditions, and water/snacks as needed. Total hike loop is approximately 5 miles, but folks can choose to turn back for a shorter hike if necessary. Please register by 1 pm on Thursday, April 23.
