Trees are shaped by their surrounding environment from the moment they emerge from the soil. Many factors affect how a tree develops, including sunlight and wind. Pruning at every stage of a tree’s life can also greatly influence its development.
Join Mohonk Preserve staff for a hands-on workshop focused on the fundamentals of pruning trees. Learn how to identify which cuts to make, select the appropriate tools, and perform proper pruning techniques. We will also explore ways to sustainably shape trees for both habitat and clearance needs. This workshop will be helpful for those who do their own landscaping, do large amounts of pruning for trail maintenance, or are interested in learning more about tree structures.
This workshop includes the opportunity to practice in the field. Participants are encouraged to bring their own personal protective equipment (PPE) and hand tools they regularly use. PPE and hand tools will be provided for those who do not bring their own. Recommended PPE includes gloves, safety glasses, and long sleeves or gauntlet gloves.
Please note: This workshop will not include chainsaw use or chainsaw training. Participants must be 16 or older.
